| Description | The Cheese and the Worms is the celebrated historical study by Italian scholar Carlo Ginzburg, first published in 1976 and now regarded as a classic of microhistory. At its center is the miller Domenico Scandella, known as Menocchio (1532–1599), who lived in a village in northern Italy. Menocchio could read and independently explored the books available to him, including the Bible, gradually developing an original set of religious and cosmological ideas that eventually brought him before the Roman Inquisition. He believed that the world had emerged from chaos in much the same way that cheese forms from milk, and that worms then arose spontaneously within this “cheese-like” chaos before becoming angels and God. Drawing on surviving interrogation records, Ginzburg reconstructs the worldview of an ordinary man living in the age of the Renaissance and Reformation and reveals the intellectual depth and autonomy of popular culture. |
