Author Foucault M.
Title Istorija seksualnosti. Tom 3: Zabota o sebe
Description The Care of the Self was Michel Foucault’s final book published during his lifetime and, in some respects, his philosophical testament. Its central subject is the genealogy of the “desiring subject”, or the moral subject confronted at a particular stage of its development with the problem of sexual conduct. Drawing on a range of Greek and Latin sources from the first two centuries AD, including works by Artemidorus, Galen, Pseudo-Lucian, and others, Foucault argues that morality can be conceived independently of the Judeo-Christian notion of sin, in which desire is treated as inherently culpable and subject to condemnation. Ancient physicians and moralists developed a different form of ethics, essentially individual in character, which linked virtue to a “style of existence”, an “art of living”, or a “culture of the self”, centred on positive values rather than prohibitions. Another important theme of the third volume of The History of Sexuality is the relationship between this ancient ethical tradition and Christian morality, which absorbed some of its elements while radically transforming their meaning.
