| Description | In the autumn of 1926, the Jewish writer Hersh-Dovid Nomberg travels to the Soviet Union and begins a journey through a country that has already been living for several years in the aftermath of the Revolution and Civil War. He is interested above all in the emergence of a new Jewish life. Nomberg travels from city to city before making his way to Jewish agricultural colonies, where encounters with local people allow him to see how the Soviet project is transforming the traditional life of the community. He arrives as an outsider who knows pre-revolutionary Russia and at the same time belongs to the wider world of European Jewish culture. This gives his perspective a certain duality, as he is drawn to the scale of the changes taking place while his own experience allows him to recognise their cost.
The travel notes offer a rare picture of the Soviet Union in the mid-1920s, before collectivisation and the Great Terror. The New Economic Policy still shapes urban life, while new social relations are already taking form in the provinces. Nomberg writes about the people he meets and the impressions he gathers along the way, and much of the book’s value lies in this closeness to lived experience. The reader encounters a country that does not yet know its own immediate future, seen through the eyes of an observer trying to understand it as his journey unfolds. |
