Zhivotov N. Peterburgskie profili

Author Zhivotov N.
Title Peterburgskie profili
Description Nikolai Zhivotov first published his sketches of St Petersburg life at the end of the nineteenth century, when the enormous city was changing with particular speed. He is interested in people whom a passer-by met every day and rarely considered worthy of a separate story. Zhivotov observes the city from close range and tries to understand a person through work and through a place in street life. One essay follows a cabman along his ordinary route. Another takes the reader into a restaurant and shows the daily world of a waiter. Even the urban wanderer receives an individual point of view. With this approach, St Petersburg ceases to be mere scenery and becomes a living environment in which social position shapes the way a person moves through the city. The sketches preserve the journalistic immediacy of their period and offer a rare opportunity to hear the everyday voice of the late imperial capital.
