Title p'olit'ik'uri esei pilmi
Description “Our task is not to make political films, but to make films politically” (Jean-Luc Godard, 1960s) – this programmatic definition led Central Europe to the revival of one of the genres of documentary cinema, the “essay film”. By 1968, European filmmakers used the film medium as a tool to criticize the authoritarian models of society at that time.
This category of film is, unfortunately, almost unknown in Georgia. Today, the socio-political significance of critical essay film may become as relevant in Georgia as it was in Western Europe in the 1950s-1980s.The strategy and mechanisms of the modern political essay film have been updated – the argumentation of the 1960s filmmaker is expressed through compilation montage; the didactic narrative has today been replaced by the film's dramaturgy, and the articulation of the film essayist by montage; the political message of the film is determined not only by its content, but also by the film's aesthetics. This edition includes essays by Chris Marker, Thomas Todde, and Harun Farouk.
