| Title | Iz Kurska v Rim. Vospominanija |
| Description | The memoirs of Prince Viktor Ivanovich Baryatinsky (1823–1904), published here for the first time, were preserved in Rome, where the author spent the final years of his life. Baryatinsky came from an ancient aristocratic family, served as a naval officer, took part in the Crimean War and the defence of Sevastopol, and was also involved in painting, archaeology, collecting and philanthropy. He was closely acquainted with the highest circles of Russian society, including members of the imperial entourage. His memoirs span almost the entire nineteenth century, taking the reader from his childhood at the Maryino estate and Moscow and St Petersburg in the 1830s to service in the Black Sea Fleet, Constantinople, Mount Athos, Italy and England, the Caucasus, the Battle of Sinop and the defence of Sevastopol. An attentive traveller and observer, Baryatinsky recorded a wealth of details about everyday life and major historical events. The edition includes an introductory essay by Valentina Oleynikova, a study by Mikhail Talalay and extensive annotations. |
