| Description | The life of Herculine Barbin (1838–1868) is one of the most mysterious and tragic stories of the nineteenth century. Assigned female at birth, Herculine spent the first twenty years of life being raised as a girl, studying in a convent and working at a girls’ school. After seeking medical help for persistent pain and declining health, Herculine was examined by doctors, and the medical and legal authorities ordered a change of official sex to male. This new legal and social status deprived Barbin of a familiar community, employment and the possibility of continuing the life previously known. In the autobiographical writings, Herculine reflects on love, loneliness, inner conflict and confrontation with a society that allowed no existence beyond a strict division between men and women.
These memoirs are both a compelling personal confession and a unique historical document concerning nineteenth-century medicine, law and gender norms. In France, the text was prepared for publication by the philosopher Michel Foucault as part of his Parallel Lives series. |
