| Title | Dzhentl'men Dzhek v Rossii. Neverojatnoe puteshestvie Anny Lister |
| Description | Anne Lister (1791–1840), known in Britain as a traveller, mountaineer and writer, earned the nickname Gentleman Jack for her masculine style of dress and independent way of life. In 1839, she set out on an extensive journey through Russia with her unofficial wife, Ann Walker, visiting St Petersburg, Moscow, Nizhny Novgorod, Kazan, Samara, Astrakhan and the Caucasus.
The book draws on the Russian section of Lister’s diaries, which remained undeciphered and unpublished for many years. They contain detailed observations from the journey, as well as accounts of her encounters with members of the Golitsyn, Panin, Tolstoy, Pushchin and Trubetskoy families. A particular place is given to Lister’s platonic romance with Sophia Radziwill. Olga Khoroshilova deciphered the diaries, studied letters preserved in British and Russian archives, and used these materials to create a historical novel about Anne Lister’s final journey. The book includes numerous illustrations, among them Lister’s own drawings. |
