Kádár E. Avgust

Author Kádár E.
Title Avgust
Description Erzsébet Kádár (1901–1946) studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, but after her father’s death she was forced to abandon her education and support herself by working behind a shop counter. Painting gradually receded from her life as she devoted herself increasingly to literature, publishing in the influential journal Nyugat and writing short stories, novellas and articles, yet despite the respect of fellow writers her work never reached a wide readership. Her first and only collection, Thirty Baskets of Grapes, published in this edition under the title August, appeared in 1944 at a moment when beginning a literary career could hardly have been more difficult, and two years later Kádár died from gas poisoning. After her death this distinctive writer seemed almost to disappear from Hungarian literary history, although she left behind a remarkable series of stories distinguished by stylistic precision and a severe refusal to sentimentalize either their characters or the world around them. Within the Hungarian literary tradition Kádár is often regarded as an heir to Margit Kaffka, whose work likewise opened up a female world without simplification or sentimentality.
