| Description | Welcome to The Neighbourhood, an unusual place where great twentieth-century writers and thinkers become your neighbours and everyday life turns into an occasion for philosophical experiment. Here, clocks may show not the time but a person’s whereabouts, pets may acquire unexpected successors, and even the most absurd events follow an impeccable inner logic.
This volume brings together five books from Gonçalo M. Tavares’s The Neighbourhood cycle. Its protagonists are “Misters” who bear the names of famous writers and poets. These are neither biographies nor literary portraits, but independent fictional characters, each with his own way of thinking, seeing the world, and dealing with reality. Mr Calvino puts the imagination to the test, Mr Valéry pushes logic to the point of absurdity, Mr Brecht tells parables in which humour quietly turns into cruelty, Mr Juarroz seeks philosophical order in the most ordinary things, while the story of Mr Walser explores what happens when the dream of perfect order collides with a reality that refuses to obey it. |
