| Title | Stertye s holsta. O zhenshhinah, izmenivshih mir iskusstva |
| Description | Few people can readily name more than three women in the history of art. Frida Kahlo, Marina Abramović and Natalia Goncharova are certainly well known. Go further back, however, to the period before the twentieth century, and even an avid museum-goer may struggle to think of a single name. Our lack of knowledge about outstanding women artists does not mean that they did not exist. Nor should we overlook the many curators, critics, patrons, collectors, muses and models who played significant roles in the development of world art. For centuries, art was regarded as a male domain, and patriarchal society, sustained through the institutional discrimination of women, reinforced this order. Women’s professional opportunities were severely restricted. Traditional art history was also largely written by men about men, with particular attention given to male artists portrayed as innovators and revolutionaries.
Professor Noah Charney demonstrates how women contributed to the formation of art history from the Middle Ages to the present day. The historical record has often been distorted, and the time has come to recognise those who deserve far greater prominence. |
