Author Sapolsky R.
Title Psihologija stressa
Description The Psychology of Stress is one of the most authoritative and widely known books on the psychology and physiology of stress. Its author, internationally renowned biologist and psychologist Robert Sapolsky, argues that the human ability to anticipate the future and worry about it is both a blessing and a curse. It is a blessing because it allows us to prepare for danger and take preventive action; it is a curse because our tendency to worry about what lies ahead can produce chronic stress.

From an evolutionary perspective, humans are predisposed to respond to threats and escape from them much as zebras do. We are meant to spend most of the day relaxed and run for our lives only when danger approaches. A zebra experiences an acute stress response from time to time, usually in reaction to an immediate physical threat. In humans, by contrast, the chronic stress response rarely reaches the same intensity, but it may persist for long periods. Zebras can die quickly in the jaws of a predator; humans tend to die more slowly, from illnesses to which chronic stress can contribute. Yet when stress is predictable and we are able to exert some control over our response to it, its damaging effects on health become considerably less pronounced.

These and many other questions concerning stress and its management are explored in Professor Sapolsky’s book. It is intended for specialists in psychology, education, biology and medicine, as well as university lecturers and students in the corresponding fields.
