Nádas P. O ljubvi zemnoj i nebesnoj

Nádas P. O ljubvi zemnoj i nebesnoj

Author Nádas P.
Title O ljubvi zemnoj i nebesnoj
Description In his wide-ranging philosophical essay On Earthly and Heavenly Love, internationally acclaimed Hungarian novelist Péter Nádas examines our inability to speak about love and our difficulty in finding words for what continues to trouble and preoccupy us. The title of the essay alludes to Titian’s famous painting, and Nádas moves from ancient myths, Ovid’s Metamorphoses and Plato’s dialogues to everyday stories, obscene language and the conventions through which different societies attempt to regulate love. His argument unfolds through a chain of questions in which each inquiry gives rise to another and Teresa of Ávila enters into an unexpected dialogue with Wittgenstein, before the book concludes with a lecture in which Nádas sets out his own conception of love. The result is a work by a major novelist assuming the role of philosopher, and it can be read as a kind of reverse counterpart to Roland Barthes’s A Lover’s Discourse: Fragments.
