Shubinskij V. Azef. Antigeroj russkoj revoljucii
| Author | Shubinskij V. |
| Title | Azef. Antigeroj russkoj revoljucii |
| Description | At the beginning of the twentieth century, as the Russian Empire was shaken by terrorist attacks and revolutions, the unassuming electrical engineer Yevno Azef was leading two secret and dangerous lives at once. He worked as a covert police agent helping the authorities fight revolutionaries while simultaneously heading the Combat Organisation of the Socialist Revolutionary Party, which carried out assassination attempts against senior officials and members of the imperial family. At times he sent the police down false trails; at others he betrayed his fellow underground activists to them.
After his exposure, Azef was transformed from a legend of the revolutionary struggle into an outcast, and his name became a symbol of disgraceful political cynicism. Yet the writer Valery Shubinsky manages to reveal the human being behind the double agent, with his attachments, certain moral limits and even political convictions. In turbulent times, when society’s moral compass seems completely disoriented, encountering the true story of this sinister cynic can be unsettling, but also sobering. |
