| Title | Evrei v Rossijskoj imperii. 1772-1917. Kratkij kurs |
| Description | How did Jews integrate into Russian society, and how did society itself respond to this process? Oleg Budnitsky’s book tells the history of Russian Jewry while also tracing the history of the “Jewish question” in the Russian Empire. After a concise historical introduction, the author turns to individual subjects ranging from Jewish military service and participation in the revolutionary movement to the Gintsburg dynasty of tax farmers, bankers and gold-mining entrepreneurs, who played an important role in the development of the Russian economy and in defending the interests of Russian Jews. The book concludes with the First World War, which became a turning point in the history of Jews in Russia, and with the events of 1917, when they found themselves amid the ruins of the empire, between the fall of the autocracy and the Bolsheviks’ seizure of power.
Oleg Budnitsky is a Doctor of Historical Sciences and Professor at the National Research University Higher School of Economics. He is the author of several books on nineteenth- and twentieth-century Russian history, including People at War, Kolchak’s Gold, and Reds and Whites, published in the "What Is Russia?" series. |
