| Description | Aron Gurevich (1924–2006) was an outstanding Soviet and Russian medieval historian, cultural scholar and philosopher, and one of the founders of historical anthropology in Russian scholarship.
The book Categories of Medieval Culture, first published in 1972, gained international scholarly recognition. Drawing on the analysis of a wide range of historical sources, it reconstructs the worldview of medieval people in a broad yet detailed form. At the centre of the study is the image of the “Other” — that is, a person who perceived and experienced social and natural reality in ways different from those characteristic of the modern era, and who shaped their behaviour in accordance with this understanding. The monograph thus develops the principles of historical anthropology, an approach to historical inquiry that places the human being, in all manifestations of human life and experience, at the centre of research. While Categories of Medieval Culture outlines a general model of medieval culture, The Medieval World: The Culture of the Silent Majority focuses primarily on the study of the cultural stratum that contemporary historiography has come to describe as “popular culture”. |
