| Description | Andrei Tavrov (1948–2023) was a Russian poet, prose writer and essayist, a vivid representative of the literary movement of metarealism, or metaphorical and metaphysical realism. A graduate of Moscow State University, he combined literary work with editorial activity, heading the poetry series of the Russky Gulliver publishing house and the literary journal Gvideon. He was the author of numerous poetry collections, novels and the philosophical Letters on Poetry. His work was marked by deep metaphor, philosophical reflection on the world and mysticism. In 2019, he became a laureate of the prestigious Andrei Bely Prize. The first volume of Andrei Tavrov’s collected works, Hippodromes, covers the period from the 1960s to the 2010s. The author’s poetry organically combines contemporary cultural experience with ancient myths, including classical images such as Achilles and Agamemnon. His work shows that myths are a living fabric that exists within the human being here and now. Tavrov explores a “pre-verbal” space. The image of the hippodrome in his poems becomes a metaphor for movement and for the race of life, where meanings, like swift horses, break beyond the limits of the human finish line. His texts are a deep spiritual and metaphysical practice that helps one find consolation and inner support in an age of crisis of meaning. |
